Prowers County Market holds Grand Opening July 25, 2026

The ribbon cutting on July 25, 2026 marked the official Grand Opening of Lamar’s Prowers County Market.  On the wall in the background is a photo of F.B. Becquet working in the original store.

The long-awaited Grand Opening of the Prowers County Market was held Saturday, July 25, 2026. The  store was abuzz with  shoppers and community members on hand to help kick off the event.  A line of people stretched out the front door, ready to sign up for a chance to win one of many giveaway items, which included a Core Hydration cooler, two bikes, a bag of groceries, and more. Two large, brightly-colored bounce houses adorned the parking lot in front of the store to the delight of the young kids in attendance. Walking inside, shoppers were greeted by smiling members of the Brown family, owners of the new store, and were able to sign up for a chance to win one of the giveaway items being offered.  In attendance for the ribbon cutting were store employees and members of Lamar City Council, Prowers County Board of Commissioners, Prowers Economic Prosperity, Main Street Lamar, and other community members.  This new generation of the Brown family (representing six generations of grocers) – Landon, Elizabeth and their three children – have been working tirelessly to return a full-service grocery store to the Lamar community and they have done an exceptional job with the store, located at 906 E. Olive St.  Hours are 7 am to 9 pm seven days a week. Landon’s grandfather, F.B. Becquet, owned and operated the original Prowers Market in the same location several decades earlier.

The store had a “soft opening” several months ago, while final touches were being made and with new products arriving daily, but this official Grand Opening showed off the store in all its splendor.  All the aisles are now fully stocked, and the bakery, flower, deli, produce, and butcher areas offer a wide variety of products, some of which the public made requests for the store to carry. The Browns want this to be a true “community store” and value suggestions for products and appreciate the area’s support of their new venture.

The store’s adorable mascot is a small, stuffed highland cow they have dubbed “Prowers the County Cow” and people at the opening were clamoring for their own cow, asking employees and the Browns how they could get one.  The Browns have been visiting local stores, banks, businesses (including our office at Robinson Printing!) and the City of Lamar offices to gift them a cow in appreciation for the support they have received and will continue to do so in the coming weeks.  Mayor Crespin was presented with his own Prowers the County Cow at the ribbon cutting, which he is proudly holding in the photo.

The store has a flyer offering weekly specials, copies of which are available inside the store and online at  www.prowerscountymarket.com  You can also pick up your weekly copy of our paper at the store, located in the same rack. They accept SNAP, WIC, and Humana OTC.  Check out their beautiful, fresh produce, delicious bakery and deli items and show your appreciation for all their efforts to bring fresh, wholesome food to our area.
