Willard R. Wight…August 14, 1925 – December 23, 2017



Funeral Services for Colonel Willard R. Wight MD will be held at 10am on Friday December 29, 2017 at the First Presbyterian Church in Las Animas, Colorado with Rev. Charles Kelly officiating. Interment will follow at Ft. Lyon National Cemetery.

Dr. Wight was born to Gladys Bilyeu Wight and Howard Willard Wight on August 14, 1925. He attended Las Animas schools and enlisted in the Army Air Corps in March 1943.  He started as a B-24 Liberator Sperry ball gunner with a heavy bombardment group in the Mediterranean Theater and served in several other positions in the air crew.

Willard Wight met his wife, Frances Myers soon after discharge from the army and courted her until their marriage in 1952. They have two daughters, Roxane Wight of Carlsbad, NM and Rebecca O’Hearn of Morrison, CO. One granddaughter, Darah Kropp and four great grandchildren.

Dr. Wight graduated from University of Colorado Medical School in 1953. He completed internship and residencies with Presbyterian Hospital, Colorado General in Denver and the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque.  He purchased a medical practice from Dr. Hagemen in 1957 and practiced medicine in Las Animas until retiring in 1989.

Dr. Wight served in the Colorado National Guard Medical Battalion in many positions throughout the state retiring as a full colonel. His service to the community included:

Bent County School Board, Chairman of the Bent County Democratic Party, City Council, and County Coroner. He was also kindhearted to many stray animals; he adopted stray dogs and fed stray cats.

He is proceeded in death by his wife, Frances; and brothers, Richard and Joseph. He is survived by his sister, Helen Ramsey; daughters; son-in-law, Dennis O’Hearn; granddaughter; great grandchildren; as well as nieces and nephews.  For more information or to leave online condolences please visit, www.horberfuneralchapel.com.
