Big Timbers Museum Curator, Kathleen Scranton, provided the Prowers County Commissioners with her monthly update on museum activities.
Through March, the museum has seen 118 visitors. This compares to 2,204 visitors in 2016, 2,327 in 2015, 2,147 for 2014 and 2,052 for 2013. Students from the Alta Vista Charter School recently held a field trip with 32 students. Scranton mentioned the school requested information on its history as they will celebrate their centennial this fall.
The museum received some recent contributions. DeAnn Tyner donated several scrapbooks containing county related articles for several years during the 1980s. Tyner had 38 years of service to the county as assistant to the county administrator for several decades and PATS director for nine years. Other donated items from residents included a cattle dehorner and telephone operator memorabilia and Wiley School yearbooks.
The museum is searching for obituaries for William Allen Givan (father), DOB-November 21, 1918 and DOD-September 23, 1988 and William Wallace Givan (son) DOB-September 14, 1937 and DOD-July 12, 2002. The museum will soon advertise for summer help. The museum is still operating under winter hours, and is open Tuesday through Saturday from 1pm to 4pm until May 31st.
