Local Veterans are Honored

The Lamar Eagles and Elks Lodges paid their individual respects to area veterans with complimentary meals for all who served in the armed forces on Friday, November 11th. Veteran’s Day, which in the past was known as Armistice Day, celebrated the signing of a peace treaty decades ago at the end of World War 1. The treaty was signed in 1918 and officially became Veteran’s Day in the United States in 1954.
Following a presentation of the American Legion Honor Guard at the Lamar Eagles, area residents and veterans were invited to their hamburger and hot dog luncheon which was provided free to veterans.
About 100 persons were served last year and it appears the same amount were on hand for this year’s meal. Members of the local police department and emergency services first responders were also on hand.
The Lamar Elks offered a free steak and shrimp dinner that evening to our nation’s veterans as part of their monthly surf and turf dinner.
