Drop Off Leftover Paint for Recycling or Pick Up Free Paint at Big R of Lamar

Lamar is hosting a free, convenient, one-day paint drop-off and giveaway event through PaintCare on Saturday, July 25 at Big R of Lamar. Households and businesses in the area can easily drop off unused paint for recycling or pick up leftover paint in good condition at no cost.

“Most people do not know what to do with leftover paint, so it ends up collecting dust in a basement or storage space,” said Sonya Hansen, PaintCare’s Colorado Program Manager. “By dropping off leftover paint at the event or year-round at any of our 200+ drop-off sites across Colorado, it can be reused, recycled, or put to another beneficial use.”

Through this one-day event, PaintCare is providing the community with a convenient way to recycle and reuse paint. The event will be held at Big R of Lamar, located at 8625 US Hwy 50, on July 25 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Households may bring most types of paint, stain, and varnish in any amount to drop off. Limits may apply to businesses bringing oil-based paint. Visit www.paintcare.org/business-limits for more information.

Space is limited and Eventbrite registration is required to attend. To register, visit paint-lamar.eventbrite.com. The event will be held rain or shine.

Through PaintCare’s PaintShare™ program, leftover paint in good condition that is dropped off at this event will be made immediately available to the public for free. Color options and volumes are not guaranteed, and paint is provided as-is. Attendees will be limited to taking no more than 25 gallons of free paint.

PaintCare accepts unwanted house paint and primers (latex or oil-based); stains; deck and concrete sealers; and clear finishes (varnish and shellac). Paint must be in sealed, original containers with the original manufacturer label. For a full list of accepted products, visit www.paintcare.org/products.

PaintCare does not accept leaking, unlabeled, or empty containers; aerosol coatings; drums or containers larger than five gallons; hazardous waste or other chemicals, such as paint thinner, solvents, motor oil, spackle, glue, adhesive, roofing tar, pesticides, or cleaning chemicals.

PaintCare is a nonprofit organization founded in 2009 by paint companies through the American Coatings Association (ACA) to manage leftover paint in states that have enacted paint stewardship laws. Colorado became PaintCare’s eighth program when it launched in July 2015. PaintCare sets up drop-off locations for leftover paint, arranges for recycling and proper disposal, and conducts public education. PaintCare also offers free direct pickups to businesses, organizations, and households with 100 gallons or more of leftover paint.

The program is funded by a nominal fee paid by paint manufacturers for each can of paint sold in Colorado: $0.00 for half pint or smaller; $0.50 for larger than half pint up to smaller than one gallon; $1.15 for one gallon up to two gallons; $2.25 for larger than two gallons up to five gallons. The fee funds paint collection, transportation, recycling, retailer training, and public education in Colorado.
