The Prowers Journal welcomes RiverHawk Fox, LLC as a new advertiser. RiverHawk Fox is a law firm which is new to Lamar and owned by Misty Grady, Attorney at Law. Ms. Grady moved to Lamar in December and worked under the sponsorship of local attorney Kim Verhoeff for several months as she awaited her bar results and licensure in Colorado. Once she acquired her Colorado license, she was able to achieve her dream of opening a private practice here. Her office is located at 122 N. Main Street, Suite #306 (in the historic Davies/Payne Hotel building). She can be reached at 918-801-3946. She explained the unique name of her practice as a combination of the name of the her undergraduate college mascot (“Rowdy the RiverHawk”) and her favorite animal, the fox.
Misty spent her early childhood in Winfield, Kansas, before moving with her family to Jay, Oklahoma, where she graduated from high school. She received her undergraduate degree from Northeastern State University in Oklahoma and her law degree from the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, graduating in 2017. Following graduation, she worked for the Arkansas Department of Human Services in Fort Smith and then spent 3 years working for the Center for Arkansas Legal Services, a nonprofit organization which provides legal help for low-income individuals, where she gained valuable experience in domestic violence cases. The next 3 years were spent working as a Public Defender for Washington County in Fayetteville.
How she landed in Lamar is an interesting story, filled with coincidences she credits to “things happening like they should”. She had always wanted to live in Colorado, having been attracted to the state’s beauty as well as having several friends who live throughout the state. She had grown tired of the Fayetteville area due to its size and the saturation of attorneys there and was ready to make a change. She felt Colorado would be a good place to put roots down in. Her best friend from her undergraduate years is a professional in Lamar and kept her interest piqued with stories of what a great community this is and who had also mentioned that there were few attorneys in the area. She saw the opportunity to make her dreams come true and began to seriously consider Lamar as the place to put those roots down in. That friend went so far as to send her a listing of a local home which she “instantly fell in love with” and she made the leap of faith with its purchase. Sadly, Misty’s mother, who had been very ill, passed away just days before the move to Lamar. Misty had been struggling with deciding whether to postpone the move when she passed, which Misty feels was her mom’s way of saying “it’s ok to go and follow your dreams”.
Misty and her husband Jake (who she describes as “a wonderful guy who is friendly, outgoing, and just perfect” ) were married in May of 2024 and are hoping to raise a family in Lamar. For now, their “kids” consist of their five beloved cats who share that dream home with them. Jake works for the Prowers County Department of Human Services.
Misty feels that coming to Lamar was a good move for her but also provides something good for the community. She grew up in a rural area and is most comfortable in one, so she feels like it’s “coming home in that aspect” and understands the nuances of living in a smaller community. She sees Lamar as an underserved community in terms of legal services. She had always loved helping those who couldn’t afford legal help and while she can no longer offer her services for free in private practice, she feels that having another local attorney will help those who would be unable to travel to other cities to obtain legal help. She loves the Lamar community which she calls “refreshing and filled with great people” as she is beginning to get to know people here. Welcome to Lamar, Misty and Jake. We wish you success!
