Citizens of Prowers County: Info on Motor Vehicle Tax Overpayment

It was discovered by the Colorado Division of Motor Vehicles and the Colorado Clerk and Recorders’ that there was an error in the State’s motor vehicle system when calculating the Specific Ownership Tax (SOT) for vehicles whose renewal was in the month of December 2018. The calculation errors overcharged certain customers Specific Ownership Tax (SOT) who fell into the following categories:

Your vehicle is a model year 2014-2018 or 2010 AND

Your motor vehicle registration expired in December 2018 AND

You renewed your registration before January 11, 2019 AND

You paid a higher SOT amount than you should have paid.

We have been notified by the Colorado Division of Motor Vehicles that the December SOT overpayment refund checks were processed for Prowers County on March 18th and were to be mailed on March 19th but were delayed due to power outages at the DPA IDS printing facility associated with the recent winter storm. County refund checks have now been mailed from the State of Colorado no later than the 20th of this month.

If you have any questions please give me a call at 719-336-8011or the State directly at 303-205-5608.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation throughout this process.

Sincerely,
Jana Coen
Prowers County Clerk & Recorder
