Toys for Tots Starts their Holiday Season

Colorado State Patrols Helps with Annual Donations

Darlene Lopez said her Toys for Tots organization will be headquartered at the Car Palace again this year. “They’ve been helpful to us in year’s past and we’ll be opening our operations on North Main Street beginning Monday, November 6th,” she stated.

Lopez and her crew of volunteers collects toys and gifts, old and new, for youngsters throughout Prowers County and distributes them the day before Christmas. This year, the 24th of December will fall on a Sunday and Darlene said her volunteers will be ready to roll out the gifts starting at 9am that morning.

Collection boxes will start to be placed at high traffic areas around Lamar, including the Toys for Tots trailer at Walmart in Lamar. Lopez added that if a business wants to post a collection box at their address, give her a call as quickly as you can at 688-0167 to have one set or, or if you would like to volunteer your time.  Workers help sort through the donations, cleaning those toys that are salvageable and sorting them according to age and gender as an appropriate gift.  As in the past, those toys should not be gift-wrapped as that prevents them from being identified for a recipient.  Toys for Tots has helped provide gifts for hundreds of children each Christmas for almost three decades in the Lamar and Prowers County area.
