Herman Edward Stricker was born on March 12, 1929 in Mutual, OH to Richard and Teresa (Boyster) Stricker. He passed away on October 24, 2017 at Bent County Health Care Center in Las Animas, CO at the age of 88.

Herman was raised in Columbus, OH. He attended Columbus High School until he decided that it was necessary for him to find work instead.  He worked as a lineman and was in the Reserves until he was called up to serve his country in the Marine Corps.  He proudly served from February 1949 to September 1951 and during this time was wounded in Northern Korea.  Among many other medals, Herman was awarded the Purple Heart and Korean Service Medals. After returning from war, Herman returned to work as a lineman for the electric company until he retired in 1963.

He met his true love, Beverly at a drive-in hamburger joint and they were married just four weeks later on July 5, 1949. At the time of his death they had shared 68 years of adventure together. Herman and Beverly were blessed with two children, Rodney and Bonnie. In the early 1960’s they moved their small family to Modesto, California to live the California version of the American Dream. Herman worked in his father-in-law’s business, Krier’s Engineering and Sales, and finished raising his family in their beloved home on Wylma Way in Modesto.

Herman and Beverly followed their daughter, Bonnie and granddaughter Kimberly’s families to Las Animas, Colorado in 1998. He enjoyed being around family, watching homecoming parades from the front porch, and “small town living”. The last years of his fruitful life were spent at Bent County Health Care Center where he was thought of as the “face” of the nursing home. He made many new friends and considered the staff to be family.

Herman was a rabid Ohio State Buckeye fan, a pipe tobacco connoisseur, a proud Marine, and a hardworking family man who enjoyed a good beer. Life taught Herman the importance of kindness, being helpful to people, and giving to charity. Anyone who had the blessing of meeting Herman knows the joy and laughter that he brought to those around him.  He was most proud of his wife and wonderful children as well as the opportunity to fight for his fellow Americans.

Herman is survived by his wife, Beverly (Krier) Stricker of Las Animas, CO; son, Rodney Stricker of TwentyNine Palms, CA; siblings, Alice and John of Columbus, OH; 5 grandchildren including Kimberly (Robert) Montejano of La Junta, CO; 10 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great grandchildren, beloved nurse and friend, Tammi Travis and her family, special niece, Jo Cox, many nieces and nephews, and a host of friends.

Herman was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Teresa Stricker; brother, Jim Stricker; daughter, Bonnie Keaton; great- granddaughter, Sasha Montejano, and service dog Pedro Hemphill.

Memorial contributions may be made to Bent County Health Care Center in care of Horber Funeral Chapel, P.O. Box 431, Las Animas, CO 81054.
