Lodging Panel Funds Car-Related Events

Requests for marketing funds for a demolition derby/monster car show and a car show/concert were approved by the Prowers County Lodging Tax Panel at their monthly meeting, May 16th.

Jacob Holdren of Holly received $3,656 to fund the Holly Gateway Classics Car Show to run concurrent with the annual Holly Fair on September 23rd.  A first time event, Holdren said the car show will immediately follow the downtown parade on Main Street.  Other plans include a beer garden and concert at the fairgrounds, featuring performer, Nick Hickman.  Food and vendors booths will be available for the day and nighttime event which includes bronc riding, tractor pull contests, exhibits and a livestock show.  “This is one of the ways we can help increase attendance at the annual fair,” he explained to the panel.  The funding will be contingent on increasing the amount of advertising set aside for out-of-state marketing venues.

The other event requesting funds is called Metal Mayhem Smash of Champions, promoted by Larry Coberley of Frog Promotions. Coberley explained his event will be held September 30th at Lamar Speedway and feature a series of demolition derby events, a ‘Wall of Cars’ stunt and plans for a monster truck exhibition.  Coberley requested $3,000 to market the event and the funding was granted on the same criteria that the advertising be spent on outlets that reach beyond the county borders in an effort to attract visitors who will extend their visit into the next day and rent local motel rooms.
