CSP Investigates Three Vehicle Crash, Fatality in Kiowa County


The Colorado State Patrol is currently investigating a three-vehicle crash, which resulted in a single fatality. The crash occurred on April 13, 2017 at 2342 hours, on Colorado Highway 287 near milepost 122, in Kiowa County. 

A 2015 Dodge Ram Pickup was traveling southbound on Colorado Highway 287 when the Dodge passed a 2005 Peterbilt, which was pulling 2014 Merritt Trailer. After Completing, the pass the Dodge re-entered the northbound lane in front of 2007 Freightliner, which was traveling northbound pulling a 2007 Wanco box trailer. The Freightliner collided with the Dodge and subsequently became engulfed in flames while traveling onto the east shoulder. Consequently, the Peterbilt also collided with the Dodge, forcing the Dodge to roll ¼ times and travel across the northbound lanes and onto the east shoulder. The Peterbilt also traveled through the northbound lane. 

The driver of the Dodge Ram was wearing his safety belt at the time of the crash and was pronounced deceased on scene. The driver’s identification is being withheld until next of kin has been notified.

The driver of the Freightliner, Bahta Wibshet , 32, of Dallas, Texas, was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries. The passenger Terekegn Abera, 40, of Las Vegas, Nevada, was also transported to a local hospital with minor injuries. 

The driver of the Peterbilt, Samuel Ramirez, 25, of Dodge City Kansas, was uninjured in the crash.  The crash remains under investigation.
