LCC awarded grant to launch Heavy Equipment Operation and Plumbing degrees

Lamar Community College (LCC) is proud to announce a major step forward in addressing critical workforce needs across Southeast Colorado. LCC has been awarded funding through the Colorado State Attorney General Office’s Partnership for Education and Rural Revitalization (COPERR) initiative to develop and launch two new
academic programs: Heavy Equipment Operation and Plumbing. Set to begin by Fall 2026, these programs are designed not only to strengthen the region’s skilled workforce but also to expand educational access to students in remote high schools throughout the College’s service area. Through early pipeline development and hands-on training, the initiative will provide both high school students and adult learners with direct pathways into high-demand careers that support local infrastructure, housing development, and economic growth.

“This is a huge win for our rural communities,” said Jake Specht, Construction Trades Faculty at LCC. “We’ve seen a growing demand for skilled workers in plumbing and heavy equipment operation, fields that are vital for housing and development. These programs are going to give students the tools they need to step into meaningful careers right here in Southeast Colorado.”

To ensure students have the support they need to access these new career pathways, LCC is also leveraging its Title V and ASAP (Accelerating Students through Academic Pathways) grants to support tuition, fees, and/or wraparound services. “These programs go hand-in-hand with our broader efforts to eliminate barriers and open doors,” said Kelly Emick, Vice President of Academic Affairs and Student Services. “Students who are interested in these trades programs may be eligible for substantial financial assistance, academic coaching, and personalized support to help them succeed from day one.”

The COPERR grant expands on existing efforts to diversify participation in skilled trades while creating career pathways for students. Dr. Rosana Reyes, President of Lamar Community College, emphasized the transformational potential of this initiative: “This funding is yet another opportunity us to better serve our rural communities with programs that align with both industry needs and student aspirations. Whether it’s operating a grader on a construction site or installing plumbing systems in new housing, these degrees will equip students with the practical skills needed to lead and build the future of Southeast Colorado while earning family-sustaining wages.”
Lamar Community College continues to be a leader in responsive rural education, offering programs that align directly with regional economic development goals.
