All board members were present for the monthly Lamar School District RE-2 meeting on August 12. After approving the agenda and board minutes from the July meeting, the Board heard a financial update, which revealed “no big changes”. The district’s financial situation is very good. Audit results will be presented to the Board within the next month or so.
Superintendent Dr. Chad Krug gave an update about the stadium project. Things are progressing well and on schedule. The concession area is nearing completion with countertops and cabinetry in place. There will be a walkthrough on the track this Wednesday, as it is nearly complete as well. Striping remains to be done on it. Foundations have been dug for the large steel gates, all concrete has been poured and lighting is in place. The press box is also nearing completion. It is still anticipated that the first game of the season can be played un the new stadium, even if the locker rooms aren’t completely finished (although they may be completed by then). Bleachers from the old stadium will be moved to provide seating on the visitor side of the field. There had been some concern by coaches that the black color of the track might present a problem due to excessive heat; however, Dr. Krug said studies in south Texas have disproved that fear. A major advertiser has signed a 5-year commitment, which will generate $100,000 in revenue.
Dr. Krug announced that four community members were approved for the district’s inaugural Athletic Review Committee (ARC). They are: Jill Bellomy, Kelli Gaines, Jake Harris, and Jared Penaflor. They were selected from a pool of 9 applicants. Board member Shannon O’Bryan will chair the committee. Terms will be staggered so as not to have them expire at the same time. It is hoped to have retention for more than one term due to this committee being a new concept for the district, anticipating that it will involve a learning curve to develop a successful program.
The board approved the resignation of several positions within the district, as well as multiple hirings. Discussion was had concerning the district’s ongoing strategic plan, with several important areas highlighted as must-haves, including school safety and measuring academic achievement. Also announced was a new stipend for three Special Education teachers, due to the excessive paperwork and extra duties the position involves. These will affect Lamar High School, Washington and Parkview elementaries.
The meeting was adjourned with an executive session to follow. The next regular meeting will be Monday, September 9, 2024.
