Bent’s Fort Chapter to host event at Sand Creek Massacre National Historic Site Visitor and Education Center August 9th, 2024

 

The Bent’s Fort Chapter will meet at the Sand Creek Massacre National Historic Site Visitor and Education Center at 1301 Maine Street in Eads, Colorado.

On Friday, August 9, the Bent’s Fort Chapter will be visiting a new exhibit at the Sand Creek Massacre National Historic Site’s recently renovated Visitor and Education Center at 1301 Maine Street in Eads, Colorado.

The exhibit is a condensed version of History Colorado’s award-winning exhibition “The Sand Creek Massacre: The Betrayal that Changed Cheyenne and Arapaho People Forever, featured at the History Colorado Center in downtown Denver. The exhibit focuses on the living culture of the Cheyenne and Arapaho people and the causes and consequences of the 1864 massacre.

The exhibit in Denver was developed by History Colorado in partnership with the Northern and Southern Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes. The satellite exhibit in Eads was designed by History Colorado and the National Park Service. Its installation was made possible by the Sand Creek Massacre Foundation with a grant from the National Park Foundation.

Meeting Place and Time:

10:00 Please meet at the Eads Senior Center directly next door to the Visitor and Education Center, where the Sand Creek Massacre Foundation will host a “meet and greet”. Coffee and cookies will be provided by the Eads Seniors. Bent’s Fort Chapter will take orders for lunches from Subway.

10:30 The group will go next door to the Visitor Center to be welcomed by National Park Service staff and learn about the Sand Creek Massacre.

Agenda:

Retired Site Manager Janet Frederick will join the group to talk about the long history of the building in which the exhibit is now housed and how it was transformed over many years into what it is today. National Park Service Archivist Kate Bloom will talk about the development of the Center for Sand Creek Massacre Studies, a partnership project between the National Historic Site and the Sand Creek Massacre Foundation.

Following the tour of the exhibit, those who are staying for lunch may return to the Eads Senior Center to enjoy lunch. Iced tea will be provided by the Eads Seniors. After lunch, attendees are welcome to visit the Sand Creek Massacre site which will be open until 4:00 p.m. The event is open to the public.
