Buckley Duane “Buck” States…December 11, 1929 – August 11, 2011

 

Buckley Duane “Buck” States, 81, passed away Thursday, Aug. 11, 2011, at the FowlerHealth Care Center. Buckley was born Dec. 11, 1929, at Holly, Colo., to Guy S. and G. Aldine (Hummel) States. He was a graduate of Holly High School and member of the track and football teams. He married his high school sweetheart Rosa B. Williams on August 2, 1949. They had five children. Buckley farmed in both Colorado and Nebraska.  Buckley enlisted in the service and served in Korea in the Army primarily as radar operator.

After returning from Korea, it was not long before he chose and continued his uniform career in law enforcement. He graduated from the Law Enforcement Academy in Colorado and Nebraska maintaining certification in many job specific areas. He lived and worked as a city/county law enforcer in the following locations-Holly, Lamar and Sterling CO: Creighton, Atkinson, Holdrege,, Bridgeport and Alliance Nebraska; ending in Concordia, Kansas.

His law enforcement career spanned over 40 years and three states.

Buckley was a member/deacon/elder in the Christian Churches in those communities in which he lived. He enjoyed working on and showing his 1941 Chrysler Coupe. In the facilities in which he live; he played pitch, bingo and followed both collegiate and professional football on TV. He participated in the Holly Historical Society.

Buckley is survived by his children John D. (Penny) States of Stella NE, Monica (Randy) Popp of Littleton, CO, Mellonie States of Gering NE. Grandchildren Donell (Irl) Clarke of Knoxville, IA, Cherokee (Matthew) Gribble of Scottsbluff, NE, Jedidiah (Melissa) Columbus, NE, Duane Popp Littleton, CO and Janet and (Ben) Heinrichs.

Great grandchildren: Aiden and Tori Clarke; Ian, Korbin, Shea Lynn and Tyler Gribble; Adelynn, Mackenzie and Hannah States.

He also is survived by his brother Donald E. States, and nephews Lyle States and family, Clint States and family, niece Linda (Berndt) Schwartz and family.

He was preceded in death by his wife Rosa, children Joel B. States and Ronia D. States. Father Guy Sylvester States; Sister in law Betty J. (Oliphant) States; nephews: Nick Berndt; Robbie Berndt; Mother G. Aldine (Hummel) States; Sister S. Arlene  (States ) Berndt; and Gus Schwartz.

Graveside services were at 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 19, 2011 at Syracuse Cemetery, Syracuse, Kansas. Pastor Mike Lewis of the First Christian Church Cheyenne Wells officiated.

The Ft. Riley Honor Team provided Military Honors.
