Albert Phillips…September 11, 1924 – November 1, 2018

 

 

Graveside Funeral Service for Albert Gale Phillips will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 10, 2018 at the Bent/Las Animas Cemetery Elder Chapel in Las Animas, CO. Visitation for Gale will be held from 1:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. Friday, November 9, 2018 at Horber Funeral Chapel in Las Animas, CO.

Albert Gale Phillips was born on September 11, 1924 in Bent County, Colorado to Carl Spry and Pearl Elsie (Scaman) Phillips. He passed away on November 1, 2018 at his home in Las Animas, CO.

Albert grew up South of Las Animas and attended Penrose School, 101 school, and graduated from Bent County High School. At the age of 16, Gale became the head of the household. He worked for Dan Gates taking care of sheep for 2 summers. He then went to work at Weber’s Chevrolet Garage and worked while attending high school. Gale also worked for Marshall Dean, caring for 100 head of cattle and 100 head of sheep. In 1946, he met Eva Jean Gore. They were united in marriage November 29, 1947. To this union three children were born, Galen, Susan and Albert. Gale worked at Jim Davis Ford Garage until 1954 where he was forced to quit due to illness. After quitting, Gale started working with his brother, Charles Phillips building houses. They worked together for 45 years building houses all over the Southeast Colorado.

Gale and Eva both drove school buses for 23 years. Gale loved fishing, working cattle, visiting with his friends, lending a helping hand to anyone in need, and playing the guitar and harmonica. He was a member of Young Farmers and Homemakers, the Sportman’s Club and the Bent County Sheriff’s Posse for many years.

Gale is survived by his wife, Eva Jean Phillips of their home in Las Animas, CO; son, Galen (Sharon) Phillips of Cheraw, CO; daughter, Susan (Dale) Morlan of Las Animas, CO; sisters, Darlene Sacks of Peabody, KS, Fern (Harold) Morlan of Las Animas, CO; 5 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Albert Leland Phillips; grandson, Clayton Ray Morlan; brothers Carl Sterling, Charles Phillips, Don Phillips; sisters, Evaline Kenworthy, Virginia Stoker, and Rosella Smith.
