Multiple Fatalities in Baca County Crash

The Colorado State Patrol is investigating a crash that occurred at approximately 0530 hours on Colorado 287 Mile Post 42, which is approximately 12 miles north of the town of Springfield in Baca County on Wednesday, September 6, 2017.

A 2002 Chevrolet Silverado was traveling northbound on Colorado 287. A 2003 Kia STL, 2015  Hyundai Elantra and a 2005 Ford Ranger were all traveling southbound on Colorado 287. The Chevrolet Silverado went into the southbound lanes of traffic and collided its left side with the left side of the Kia. After impact, the Kia continued southbound coming to a controlled stop facing south.

The Chevrolet continued northbound and collided its left side with the front of the Hyundai. After impact, the Hyundai continued southbound, colliding with a guard rail and came to a controlled stop behind the Kia. The Chevrolet continued northbound and collided its front with the front of the Ford. After impact, the Chevrolet continued north as it was rotating counter-clockwise and came to rest in both lanes of traffic facing southwest.

The Ford was pushed northbound, rotating counter-clockwise and came to rest in the southbound lane, facing northwest. The Chevrolet then became engulfed in flames. The Chevrolet’s driver and passenger has not been identified at this time, pending further investigation. They were declared deceased by the Baca County Coroner.

The Kia’s driver, 67-year-old James Norberg of Del City, OK, was restrained at the time of the crash. He sustained minor injuries and was transported to Southeast Colorado Hospital in Springfield.

The Kia’s passenger, 18-year-old Kalaina Norbert of Del City, OK, was restrained at the time of the crash. She sustained minor injuries and was transported to Southeast Colorado Hospital in Springfield.

The Hyundai’s driver, 37-year-old Rachel Norberg of Del City, OK, was restrained at the time of the crash. She sustained minor injuries and was transported to Southeast Colorado Hospital in Springfield.

The Hyundai’s passenger, 17-year-old Gwendolyn VanGundy of Del City, OK, was restrained at the time of the crash. She sustained minor injuries and was transported to Southeast Colorado Hospital in Springfield.

The Ford’s driver, 34-year-old Craig Norberg of Del City, OK, was restrained at the time of the crash. He sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased by the Baca County Coroner.

The Ford’s passenger, 63-year-old Wendy Norberg of Del City, OK, was restrained at the time of the crash. She sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased by the Baca County Coroner.

Drugs and alcohol are not being considered as contributing factors to the crash. This crash remains under investigation at this time.
