KVAY Hosting Broadcast on Local Drug Issues

LAMAR, CO—The Centers for Disease Control are calling substance abuse a national epidemic. As much as many people don’t want to think about it, Southeast Colorado is dealing with this issue like the rest of the nation. It is necessary to identify problems and talk about the solutions to substance abuse.

KVAY hopes to begin a regional conversation through “SAVE our Communities.” SAVE is an acronym for Substance Abuse Victimizes Everyone. “SAVE our Communities” will be a day full of information from regional and statewide organizations seeking to find solutions to substance abuse struggles.

On Friday, September 29, KVAY will dedicate each hour from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. to providing education on issues related to substance abuse. Experts will talk with KVAY personalities as part of regular programming throughout the day.

These organizations are part of this critical discussion—Bent County Sheriff’s Office, Colorado Consortium for Prescription Drug Abuse Prevention, Crossroads Turning Points, Lamar Police Department, Prowers County Opioid Task Force, Prowers County Sheriff’s Office, Prowers Medical Center, Otero County Sheriff’s Office, Rise Above, and Southeast Health Group.

These experts are prepared to discuss all aspects of substance abuse issues. Throughout the day, a wide variety of topics will be addressed in an attempt to provide as much information for the community as possible. The experts are prepared to answer questions from the general public. Listeners of the broadcast will be able to call in to ask questions at (719) 336-1057, e-mail questions to studio@kvay.com, or pose questions via Twitter to @KVAY1057.

“Our region like much of the country has been affected greatly by this epidemic. It has touched so many lives including those close to me. We felt it necessary to say that ‘Substance Abuse Victimizes Everyone’ because it is not only the user, but family members and the entire community that suffers. At KVAY, we hope this day will generate a discussion of solutions including treatment and prevention,” said Aaron Leiker, KVAY Operations Manager.

“SAVE our Communities” is being held in September which is also National Recovery Month. Every September, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration sponsors Recovery Month to in-crease awareness and understanding of mental and substance use disorders and celebrate the people who recover. The annual theme is Join the Voices for Recovery: Strengthen Families and Communities. This theme fits well with the discussion planned for September 29th.

The event is sponsored by Crossroads Turning Points. This organization provides prevention, intervention, and treatment services for all counties in Southern Colorado.
