Upcoming Happenings at Bent’s Old Fort

Bent’s Old Fort

The National Park Service will celebrate its 101st birthday this Friday, August 25, with free admission on Friday to all National Park units across the country.  Locally, Bent’s Old Fort National Historic Site will waive fees for touring the fort.  The fort will be free to all that day, with operating hours from 8 am to 5:30 pm.  Guided tours of the fort will be provided at 9:30 am, 11 am, 1 pm and 2:30 pm.

Another upcoming date of importance is Monday, August 28.  As of that date, the America the Beautiful Senior Public Lands Passes will see a major price increase.  Through Sunday, August 27 the cost for a lifetime Senior Pass will be $10.  Beginning on Monday, that price jumps to $80 for the lifetime pass, although Senior Annual Passes (good for one year) will be available for $20.  These passes are available to any U.S. Citizen, age 62 and older.  The park has a large supply of passes available.  If you are 62 or older, visit the fort by Sunday to get your pass at the lower rate.

Finally, Bent’s Old Fort will be returning to off-season hours beginning on Friday, September 1.  As of that date, the fort will be open to the public from 9 am to 4 pm daily through next May.  The fort continues to be open every day of the year, except for Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day.

Bent’s Old Fort National Historic Site is located on Colorado Highway 194, 8 miles east of La Junta or 15 miles west of Las Animas.   For more information, visit the park’s website at www.nps.gov/beol or call the park at (719) 383-5010.
