CSP Investigating Two Vehicle Crash in Kiowa County

Friday, June 16, 2017, at approximately 4:34pm, Colorado State Patrol was notified of a two vehicle crash on Highway 287 near mile post 113, which is located inside the town of Eads, Colorado.

Vehicle #1, a 2010 white Dodge Dakota, driven by 26 year old John, Launius of Eads, CO, was traveling northbound (in a western direction). Also inside the Dodge Dakota was front-seat passenger, 45 year old, Maria Mendia of Sugar City, CO, and back-seat passenger, 20 year old, Eboni Nash of Eads, CO.

Vehicle #2, a 2018 white semi and trailer combination, driven by 66 year old Kerry Metzger of Aurora, CO, was parked in the shoulder at the rest stop. The Dodge Dakota veered right into the shoulder colliding front to rear with the parked semi.  All three occupants of the Dodge Dakota were wearing their seatbelts.  Kerry Metzger was not in his vehicle during the crash.

Both Launius and Nash were transported to a nearby hospital for minor injuries. Mendia was flown to a hospital in Pueblo for serious injuries.  The cause of the crash is still under investigation; however speed and alcohol do not appear to be a factor.
