Funeral Services for Las Animas, Colorado resident Alta Mosby will be held at 10:00 a.m. July 10, 2019 at the First Baptist Church in Las Animas, Colorado with Pastor Adam Markley officiating. A private family interment will follow in the Bent/Las Animas Cemetery. Per Alta’s request, there will be no visitation.
Alta Lenola Mosby passed away surrounded by her family on June 29, 2019 at the Bent County Healthcare Center in Las Animas, Colorado at the age of 93. Alta was born on January 20, 1926 in Zena, Oklahoma to Henry H. and Alta Blanche (Dickson) Mosby.
Alta started school at the age of 4 in a one room schoolhouse in Dennis, Oklahoma and then attended a one room school in Zena, Oklahoma. She graduated from high school in Miami, Oklahoma in 1944. She then moved to Tulsa for a few years prior to moving to Las Animas, Colorado in 1947 where she would join the First Baptist Church. Alta began working for J.C. Penney Co. in Las Animas in 1949 until the store closed in 1975 when she was then transferred to the La Junta Store where she remained until she retired in 1982. She devoted 33 ½ years of services to the company.
Alta received several certificates from Otero Junior College as well as other instructors for Art and Design. She took a course in Legacy Writing which got her more interested in family writing as well as photography.
Alta spent several years volunteering at Fort Lyon. She was a charter member of the Pilot Club of Las Animas, belonged to the Faith Rebekah Lodge #64 of Las Animas, Lorena Rebekah Lodge of La Junta, Pioneer Historical Society, Bent County Senior Citizen Club, served as the First Baptist Church clerk for 30 years, Sunday School Secretary, Deaconess, and sang in the church choir. She was also a member of the Arkansas Valley Singles and the Red Hat Society.
Alta enjoyed her time scrapbooking family history, studying church and town history, keeping up on current events, and collecting school reunion photo books.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Blanche Mosby; brother, Marland Mosby; and sister, Reva Stoner.
Alta is survived by her sisters, Anita Sherman and Cleva Bourne of Las Animas, Colorado; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church in care of Horber Funeral Chapel, P.O. Box 431, Las Animas, Colorado 81054.
