Graveside service for Las Animas, CO resident, Norma Price will be held at 11:00 a.m. on September 25, 2018 at Bent/Las Animas Cemetery in Las Animas, CO.
Norma Lee Price was born on November 14, 1932 to William Anthony and Virginia Lee (Morgan) Price in Las Animas, CO. She passed away on September 18, 2018 at Arkansas Valley Regional Medical Center in La Junta, CO at the age of 85. Norma was raised on the family ranch South of Las Animas, CO. She graduated from Bent County High School in 1950. Norma then graduated in 1954 from Colorado A&M with a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education. She taught volleyball, softball, track and field, and even cheerleading in high school in Eastern Colorado and Arizona. She then returned to Colorado State University to earn her first master’s degree in M Ed 1959. In 1969 she earned a second master’s degree at Arizona State University. She then went on to teach and coach archery at Cal State University in Sacramento in the early 1970’s.
Norma retired from teaching in 1991 and moved back to the family ranch in Las Animas, CO. to care for her aging mother Virginia. Virginia passed away 20 years later at 102 years old. Norma continued to manage the family ranch alone, staying in touch with students she taught over the years. She enjoyed keeping up with their achievements and happenings and even frequently attended their class reunions. Having also been a Colorado State champion barrel racer in her youth, she loved challenging her nephew, Mark in Pro Fantasy Rodeo during the PRCA Nation Finals every year.
During her retirement, Norma competed in archery, discus, javelin, and shotput in the Rocky Mountain National Senior Games and the National Senior Games (Senior Olympics). She is the current Rocky Mountain Senior Games record holder for over 60’s, over 65’s, over 70’s, over 75’s, and over 80’s in the outdoor compound bow. She also has several standing records in the indoor compound bow, indoor recurve bow and the discus. At the National Level, she currently holds several standing records in the compound bow and one in the shotput. She often traveled to the games with the help of her friends and former students. She shared her love of archery with the local 4-H archery club, helping kids with their bows and teaching them archery skills.
Norma is survived by her brother, William “Bill” (Marcella) Price of Denver, CO; niece, Susan (Chris) Hegie of Denver, CO; and nephew, Mark (Naomi) Price of Denver, CO; grand-niece, Marlee Smith; grand-nephew, Clayton Hegie; as well as numerous cousins, an aunt, and many friends and former students.
She is preceded in death by her father, William Anthony Price in 1968 and her mother, Virginia Lee Price in 2011.
