Every two years, the Share the Spirit Foundation hosts the Sip and Savor Fundraiser, held in the fall at Prowers Farms. Foundation co-creator, Karen Voepel, told the Prowers County Lodging Panel, funds from the October 6th event will be used to purchase shoes, socks and other needed essentials for local school children. The Panel board held their monthly meeting at Lamar Community College on Tuesday, July 17th. Voepel requested $4,200 to help promote the evening event, which features a food and music theme. The October event, which usually features a prominent chef, will be based on Jimmy Buffet’s ‘Margaritaville’ song. Voepel said she anticipated from 10 to 12 rooms in Lamar will be booked for two nights. The panel approved $2,400 in funding, the same as her previous request for the Sip and Savor events. Over 150 pairs of shoes were given out to area children last October.
Angie Cue, Lamar’s Community Development Director and Executive Director of Lamar Partnership Inc., explained her request for $2,078 to be applied for print/shopping directories which will be distributed to local hotels during events held in Prowers County. The Panel approved $1,700 in funding which was suggested to be spread out over a two year marketing period.
Pat Palmer, representing the Santa Fe Trail Dutch Oven Exposition held during the annual Sand and Sage Fair, requested $500 for materials for the August 9th event which features five teams showcasing the art of Dutch Oven cooking. Teams will prepare their meal from their campsite displays and explain the process of charcoal-fired cook pots in the preparation of a meal which include meat, vegetables, breads and desserts. Dishes will be judged and the public will enjoy free samples from each of the teams. The display runs from 1pm to 5pm and is held on the northwest corner of Elmer’s Garden. The $500 request was approved by the Panel whose next meeting will be Tuesday, August 21st.
