Sparrow House Ministries Re-located to Calvary Baptist Church

LAMAR’S FOOD PANTRY HAS MOVED

Sparrow House Ministries has a new address—907 South Third Street (Third and Cedar), across from Parkview Elementary School and Strainhurst Senior Housing—in the former Sunday School wing of the Calvary Baptist Church.

About thirteen years ago Calvary Baptist Church moved services and ministry to its concrete school building. The congregation continues to meet there Sunday morning, Sunday evening, and Wednesday evening.

All these years church members have prayed that the south building could be used, preferably in a way to benefit the community. When contacted in February about the possibility of hosting the food pantry, they enthusiastically accepted the proposal. Within two weeks several Sparrow House volunteers moved tons of food, freezers, shelving, and more, and the pantry opened to the public in its new location March 1, 2018.

Some upgrades, such as new furnaces and air conditioning units, are complete thanks to donations and some assistance from the church. Other needed upgrades include handicap-accessible restrooms, insulation, and walk-in cooler and freezer units.

The mission of Sparrow House Ministries is “to supply emergency food assistance and encouragement to families in need within our community.” Directors Joel and Veronica Jacoby state, “It is our goal to establish the ministry well so that it will be able to endure and benefit the community for many generations to come.” They add, “Sparrow House has been blessed with many local individuals, businesses, and organizations doing food drives or donating food and funds. We are able to help meet the needs of 800 to 1000 people per month.”

The pantry is open Thursdays with the full pantry available on the first and third Thursdays from noon to 1:30 p.m. and 6:00–7:30 p.m. On the second and fourth Thursdays from 5:00–7:00 p.m. just the cooler pantry is open. When a fifth Thursday occurs (about four times a year), the pantry is closed.

People may visit one cooler pantry and one full pantry each month. Food to last about two days is distributed based on family size. One form of ID is requested the first time someone visits.
