Courtney Rosengrants submitted the application selected for the Walter Ely Scholarship of $1,000 for 2017 which was presented by the SDS Board of Directors on Monday, May 15th at the Southeastern Development Services offices on South 4th Street in Lamar.

There was a change in criteria for this year’s award, a departure from the earlier essays requirements which began with the first award, seven years ago. Amy Karr, board member, said the selection this year was based on a student’s career or education goals, experience with someone who is intellectually and/or developmentally disabled as well as a brief description of how the scholarship will be applied.

Rosencrants said she has enrolled in a special education class focusing on autism through the online courses available at the University of North Dakota. “I’m a speech-language pathologist assistant at BOCES and following the 18 month course, I intend to remain and work in this area for special education for autism.

The scholarship is named after Walter Ely, a Lamar resident who passed away several years ago. He was noted for his continued efforts collecting discarded beverage cans which were recycled and turned into funds for SDS activities.
