Employers Seeking Employees at Job Fair

Terming the job and resource fair at the WorkForce Center in Lamar a success, Elva Macias, Labor and Employment Specialist, said the event on April 25th gave the employers an opportunity to visit with each other and network.

Held at the SOS Center on East Olive Street in Lamar, 99 attendees had an opportunity to meet with businesses looking to hire from the area and made use of the resource center’s computers to complete online job applications.

Display and work tables and chairs were set up in the main hall at the SOS Center through Tuesday afternoon. Kyla Sather, also a Workforce Specialist,  noted that just as in the quarterly job fairs, prospective employees were lined up in advance of the 1:30pm start in an attempt to find work.

Macias noted there were approximately 18 persons that had the possibility of jobs being offered to them. The resumes and application forms will be used for future possible job connections.  Some of the employers on hand included Gateway Safety Flare, a new businesses under development in Lamar; Lamar Estates, High Plains Community Health Center, the Lamar Police Department, CoreCivic Corrections, Loaf N’ Jug, Love’s Gas, Mountain Prairie, Rock Tran LLC, SDS and Taco Johns.

The latest unemployment figures for Prowers County shows the unemployment percentage for March at 2.4% which translates to 140 persons without jobs. Last year at this time, the unemployment percentage was 4.2%.
