Bennie F. Shumate February 23, 1934 – July 16, 2024

 

A celebration of life for longtime Lamar, Colorado, resident Bennie F. Shumate will be held at 10:00AM on Thursday, July 25, 2024 at the First Baptist Church with Pastor Darren Stroh officiating. Interment will follow at the Fairmount cemetery with full Military Honors under the auspices of the local V.F.W. and American Legion posts.

Visitation for Bennie will be held from 2:00PM until 4:00PM on Wednesday, July 24, 2024 at the Peacock Family Chapel.

Bennie was born on February 23, 1934 at Springdale, Arkansas to John Bryan and Versa Dell (Carter) Shumate and passed away on July 16, 2024, at his home at the age of 90 with his wife by his side.

He is preceded in death by his parents, first wife Willa Jean Shumate, son Thomas E. Shumate, grandson Colin P. Shumate, and infant granddaughter Cassandra, siblings Virginia Brown, James C. Shumate and Charles Shumate.

Bennie is survived by his wife Polly Munro Shumate of the family home in Lamar, CO, son James R. Shumate of Colorado Springs, Colorado, grandchildren Daniel T. (Jennifer) Shumate, Andrew P. Shumate, Carley M. Shumate, Verva Jean Shumate, and great-grandchildren William and Caroline Shumate. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law Ann Shumate and Merle Smith as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other family and a host of friends.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Lamar Masonic Lodge #90A.F. & A.M., Lamar Shriners Club, The Lamar Lions Club, and/or Lamar First Baptist Church either direct or in care of the funeral home office.
