Pizza, prizes, music, Team Pain and more will be on hand Saturday, August 11th for the grand opening of Wheels Park, the skateboard park now in use at Willow Creek Park in Lamar.
Rick Akers, Lamar Parks and Recreation Department Director said the festivities will run from noon to 5pm on the 11th. “We’ll have Little Caesar’s handle the pizza for the event, plus a deejay will have musical entertainment and we’ll also have some prizes and give-aways.” Akers said the skateboard park designers, Team Pain, will also be on hand to put on some demonstrations and talk about the development of the park since it was first planned.
Some final touches to the park are now underway with additional landscaping taking place and the placement of pipes for an underground sprinkler system. “We’re putting sod around the park by next Tuesday and Wednesday,” Akers said, adding that the ceremonies are coinciding with events from the annual Sand and Sage Fair. The traditional parade for that begins at 10am, but should be completed by noon so many attendees will be able to be on hand for the official opening of the skateboard park.
Akers also noted that some final touches to North Gateway Park took place recently with the addition of the shade pavilion and now, picnic table and a charcoal barbecue pit adjacent to rest room facilities.
“The tables and bbq have been in use for about a month now,” he said, noting that aside from some erosion control on the eastern boarder of the main pond, most of the work at the park have been completed.
