Cormae Rose Yeakel – Peterson, passed away on Sunday, November 19, 2017 in Montrose, CO at Valley Manor Care Center; at the age of 83. She was born on February 16, 1934 in Wiley, Colorado to Jacob and Emma (Roth) Schleining. She graduated from McClave High School and Blairs Business Collage in Colorado Springs. Cormae married Jeremiah Yeakel in Glenwood Springs, CO on July 1, 1953, at the age of 19. One daughter Laura May Yeakel was born on March 14, 1962 during the marriage. The family moved to Montrose in 1970.
Cormae was a great help to her father on his farm, working in the fields and driving the tractor starting at age 12. She was also responsible for the feeding of her father’s 2,000 turkeys during her teen years for five years. Cormae took a great interest and love for handicap children and adults. She served as Secretary and Treasure on the Board of Directors of the Montrose Handicap Association. She served twelve years on the Community Options Inc. Board of Directors as Secretary, and on their Finance Committee and Admissions Committee. She also serviced as Secretary and Treasure of the Western Colorado Antique Association for several years. Cormae started collecting antiques in the 1980’s. She traveled 32 states to buy antiques. She opened C&D Antique Store in Montrose in 1990. She loved her store and enjoyed all her many customers.
In 2006, Cormae sold her large personal antique collections on a two day antique auction in Kansas City. Cormae traveled to eight different countries, she won yard of the week in Montrose several times. Her 95 roses were a delight to see every summer. Cormae was an incredible person for the many years of her love, care and devotion for her handicap daughter, Laura.
Survivors include her daughter Laura Yeakel of Montrose, CO; one sisters, Ella French of Arlington, TX. Along with several nieces and nephews. Cormae is preceded in death by her parents Jacob and Emma Schleining; three brothers, Delores Jake Schleining, Monroe Emanuel Schleining, William Robert Schleining; and one sister Della Elizabeth Hazel.
There will be a Graveside Service on Tuesday, November 28, 2017 at 3:00 p.m. at the Fairmount Cemetery in Lamar, Colorado. Arrangements are under the care of the Peacock Funeral Home.
