Lamar Community College freshmen in the Horse Training & Management (HTM), Equine Business Management (EBM), and Barrel Horse Training programs demonstrated their hard work from this past year during the Spring Horse Show held on Friday, April 28.
At the end of each semester, students in the equine programs at LCC perform reining patterns and additional horsemanship skills to demonstrate what they’ve learned as well as how well they’ve applied that knowledge to training their horses.
Each student is scored based on how well they execute the reining pattern. Sarah Lambrecht and Carol Strickland, both alumni of the LCC HTM program, served as judges for the event. Lambrecht judged the EBM and HTM students; Strickland judged the Barrel Horse students.
The students’ family and friends are able to come down to watch the show as well as the horse owners themselves.
Gene Ann Dreyer of Hat J Performance Horses out of Marsing, Idaho, came to see the work that freshmen Shoudi Estes had put in with her horses. Dreyer has been bringing her colts to LCC to start their training for over 10 years.
She praised the students and the programs at LCC.
“Do you know how wonderful it is for me to bring my babies up here where I know they’re taken care of?” asked Dreyer. “And when I get them home riding them is piece of cake. I love LCC.”
HTM instructor JJ Rydberg presented a range of awards to the programs’ top-performing students including:
All-Around HTM Cowgirl: Shoudi Estes (Eagar, AZ) – $500 Scholarship and Buckle
HTM Student of the Year: Jenaye de Seve (Canyon Country, CA) – $500 Scholarship and Spurs
