Balloons Commemorate Memorial Day at Fairmount Cemetery

Clear blue skies and light winds from the north made for a perfect Memorial Day morning to launch balloons this past Monday from the veteran’s section of Fairmount Cemetery in Lamar. Peacock Funeral Home organized the event, which may, according to Clay Peacock, become an annual observance.
Some 40 to 50 persons were on hand, using colored magic markers to write a heart-felt message on one of many balloons supplied by the funeral home. John Sykes of Peacock, read a poem honoring the departed and the occasion of the launch and at the conclusion, they were released into the sky.
Again, a perfect day, with just enough wind to lift the balloons up and over the border of trees along the southside of the cemetery and send them on their way.
“We hope to be able to do this again next year,” explained Cassie from Peacock, “It seems like a nice way to remember our loved ones and we look forward to a larger turnout for next year. We were able to learn a little on how to organize this one to make next year’s even better.”By Russ Baldwin
