(Lamar, Colorado; March 20, 2017) Lamar Community College and the Domestic Safety Resource Center (DSRC) will be hosting a Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event to be held on April 22, 2017, from 10am-noon.

As the old saying goes, “you can’t really understand another’s experience until you’ve walked a mile in their shoes.”  This event invites men to literally walk a mile in women’s shoes.  While it is not easy walking in high-heeled shoes, this is a fun event that helps get the community talking about something that is difficult to address: gender relations and violence against women.

Men, women, and children are all welcome to participate.

The event will start on the LCC campus, on the lawn just south of the Betz Technology Center, and will be walking to the Lamar High School and back.  A limited supply of women’s shoes will be available in men’s sizes for teams to borrow during the event and awards will be given for “Most Blisters,” “Craziest Outfits,” “Top Individual Pledges,” “Top Team Pledges,” and more.

Gender violence and sexual assault are concerns at any college campus, and Lamar Community College takes the responsibility to prevent these issues very seriously.  This event is intended to help raise awareness for and prevention of gender violence and sexual assault.

“Statistically, one in every four or five women are victims of sexual assault while in college,” said event organizer and LCC Human Resources Director Jenni Mortimeyer.  “Lamar Community College takes its responsibility to prevent sexual assault and other forms of relationship violence on our campus very seriously. By partnering with the Domestic Safety Resource Center on this event, we hope to engage our students in the prevention conversation. It is our hope that they will be encouraged to stand up against gender violence here; as well as wherever they go in the future.”

Participants will receive a t-shirt with their registration fee, which is $10 for adults and $5 for students with student ID.  Registration is due by April 1 to guarantee a t-shirt.

All participants are encouraged to raise pledges to help benefit DSRC.  While participants are not required to raise pledges, any fundraising done will directly benefit individuals in the area. Additionally, anyone who cannot make the event but would still like to help is encouraged to donate to the cause.

All funds raised at the event will benefit the Domestic Safety Resource Center to help them provide services to victims in the region.
