Nellie V. Coberley…March 18, 1915 – November 3, 2016

Funeral services for Nellie Coberley will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, November 9, 2016 at the Missionary Baptist Church in Lamar, CO. Pastor Lance Halford will officiate.  Interment will follow at Riverside Cemetery.  Visitation will take place on Tuesday, November 8, 2016 from 1:00-7:00 p.m. at Valley Memorial Funeral Chapel in Lamar, CO, with family present from 5:00-7:00 p.m.

Nellie Viola (Christian) Coberley was born March 18, 1915 in Oskaloosa, MO to Selby and Sarah (Lawson) Christian.  She departed this life on November 3, 2016 in Lamar, CO at the age of 101.

Nellie’s family moved to Sheridan Lake, CO when she was 7 months old.  Nellie attended school there, graduating in 1933.  As a young girl, Nellie always enjoyed reading, sewing and writing.   At the age of 10, she accepted Christ as her Savior.  Also during that time she began writing poems which later led to her song writing.  Nellie became a sewing instructor for WPA.  After a school carnival, Nellie went on her first date with a special young man, Melburn Coberley.  Nellie was married to M.V. “Doc” Coberley on June 25, 1939.  They moved to Lamar, CO in 1945 and to this union, 15 children were born.  Nellie was a homemaker, seamstress, poet, songwriter, and friend to everyone she met. Nellie also had many musical talents as well and enjoyed singing, playing piano and guitar.  Even in her busy life she found time to read and study her Bible.  She also enjoyed reading books for pleasure. Nellie had a soft spot in her heart for cats and Chow dogs. She was a former member of SOS and AARP, and attended the Missionary Baptist Church until she entered Juniper Village, what is now Lamar Estates, due to her failing health.

She is survived by her children, Verna (Gary) Henson of Lamar, CO, Vic Coberley of Lamar, CO, Helen (Marion) Murphy of Gainesville, FL, Larry J. (Judy) Coberley of Midwest City, OK, Harvey (Sherrill) Coberley of Bennington, VT, Lois (Gene) Hainstock of Augusta, KS, Linda (Rick) Falconburg of Augusta, KS, John (Annette) Coberley of Cooledge, AZ, Rose (Dale) Edleman of Lamar, CO, Edward Coberley of Lamar, CO, Don Coberley of Lamar, CO, Sharon (Charles) Hoffmeister of Lampasas, TX, and Melburn (Carrie) Coberley Jr. of Lamar, CO; 46 grandchildren, 80 great grandchildren, and 28 great-great grandchildren.  She is also survived by many other relatives and a host of friends.
