Two Die in Car-Train Crash in Las Animas

 

The Colorado State Patrol is investigating a fatal crash that occurred on Bent County Road 8.75 just west of Las Animas, CO, in Bent County, State of Colorado. The crash occurred on September 20, 2019, at approximately 0831 hours. 

A 2001 Toyota Corolla was traveling southbound on Bent County Road 8.75 approaching a railroad crossing north of Highway 50. The Toyota did not yield and was struck by an Amtrak train that was traveling westbound. The Toyota came to rest south of the railroad tracks on its driver side. The train came to a controlled stop on the railroad tracks west of the crossing. 

The driver of the Toyota was identified as Samuel R. Cornejo, a 35 year old male from Las Animas Colorado. He was pronounced as deceased on scene. The passenger in the Toyota was identified as Gabriela Martiez, a 35 year old female from Las Animas, Colorado. She was pronounced as deceased on scene. Both occupants were wearing seatbelts.  

The Amtrak Train had 126 passengers and 12 crew members aboard. None of the passengers or crew members were injured as a result of the crash. 

Alcohol, drugs and speed do not appear to be factors in the crash at this time. The crash remains under investigation.
