The state of Colorado held its high school rodeo finals in Craig, May 23rd through 27th. At the state finals there are two go rounds and a short go round to cap off the 2018-2019 rodeo season. The top four in each event are recognized with prizes. Those four qualify for the National High School Finals held in Rock Springs, WY in July. Points and money were given in each go round and the average. The rodeo athletes have been accumulating points from the eight rodeos that were held throughout the year (four in the fall and four in the spring).
Colorado has always been a state with stiff competition and is usually well represented at the national level. Colorado can boast having the 2018 National Barrel Racing Champion in Elle Eagles, who now college rodeos in Texas. To illustrate the numbers in the Colorado high school division, there are 56 barrel racers, 38 team roping teams, and 34 tie-down ropers, to name a few, competing for points and money. They come from every corner of the state with their best steed in tow.
Four area cowboys and cowgirls loaded the horse trailers and headed over the mountains to test their skills. Wiley residents, Wyatt and Wayttyn Wollert, children of Waco and Danielle Wollert, and Lamarites Bianca and Braxton O’Bryan, children of Shannon and Dawni O’Bryan traveled to the farthest place from Lamar in the state of Colorado-Craig America.
