Shelby Davis of McClave is this year’s recipient of the Walter Ely Memorial Scholarship, awarded by Southeast Developmental Services.

For the past five years, SDS has awarded a $500 scholarship to a deserving high school student who plans to further their educational career. The funds are derived from recycled cans, contributed by donors who are following the tradition of the late Walter Ely, who would cover the town, collecting and recycling cans for SDS.

Shelby stated that she intends to pursue a career in speech therapy and will attend college in Kansas next year to achieve that goal, majoring in Communication Disorders when she becomes a Speech Pathologist.

Along with volleyball and basketball she has been involved with FBLA and FFA, holding leadership positions and improving her communication skills. She has been active in various community activities including:  stocking shelves for the Five Loaves Food Pantry, March of Dimes Fundraising, Recreation League Youth Girls Coach and community clean-up efforts.
