A Memorial Mass for Mary Gallegos will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, April 15, 2016 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Las Animas, Colorado. Father Mariusz Wirkowski and Father Raymond Grimes will be concelebrants with Deacon Allan Medina assisting. A Rosary/Scripture service will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 14, 2016 also at St. Mary’s Catholic Church.
Mary Estella (Arguello) Gallegos was born on January 19, 1922 in Alcreek, Colorado, to Antonio and Maria “Dolores” (Martinez) Arguello and passed away on April 10, 2016 in Las Animas, Colorado.
Mary was lovingly known to many as “Little Mary”. She and her family moved to Las Animas, Colorado where she attended school through the eighth grade. She met Joaquin “Henry” Gallegos and they were married on April 20, 1939, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. They were honored following the Bent County Courthouse renovation on May 1, 2010 for being the longest wed couple that had obtained their marriage license at the courthouse. Mary and Henry had been married for a total of 72 years at that time. To this union was born one son, Andrew Gallegos. Andrew was the victim of a tragic accident at the age of seven, passing away in 1946. Mary and Henry didn’t have any other children of their own, but Mary became a second Mother/Grandmother to her many nieces and nephews and they all loved her dearly.
Mary was an active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and participated in many activities there. She delivered Meals on Wheels, loved attending Council of Catholic Women meetings, belonged to the Mariachi group for many years, drove those in need to their medical appointments both in and out of town, and was always ready to help anyone in need. She loved cooking, socializing, and most of all, dancing.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Antonio and Maria “Dolores” (Martinez) Arguello; husband, Joaquin “Henry” Gallegos; son, Andrew Gallegos; sisters, Maria Lucero and Jane Trujillo.
She is survived by her brother, Fred (Aurelia) Arguello of Castle Rock, Colorado; sister, Rachel Medina of Las Animas, Colorado; and many nieces and nephews.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary’s Catholic Church in care of Horber Funeral Chapel, P.O. Box 431 Las Animas, CO 81054.
