Colorado Cattlemen’s Ag Water NetWORK will host a webinar on Wednesday, July 22 highlighting the 2025 results of a split field irrigation trial near Pueblo, CO.

Producer TJ Knecht with LoPresti Farms irrigated half of his corn field guided by soil moisture sensor data and the other half using traditional assessment methods of soil look and feel.

Following the soil moisture sensor readings, TJ reduced irrigation set times by a third. This resulted in the sensor-managed acres receiving 3.2 acre-feet of water over the season, compared with 5.0 acre-feet applied on the control half of the field. Despite the difference in water applied, yields between the two plots were similar.

TJ will discuss the results of the trial, along with challenges, including the time it took to learn how to interpret and trust the soil moisture data, as well as the study’s profit and loss aspects.

This field trial project was funded through Colorado Ag Water Alliance’s Drought Resiliency Grant Program. Greg Peterson, Executive Director of CAWA, will provide an overview of the lessons learned from multiple projects funded by CAWA, including where irrigation scheduling does and does not make sense, along with irrigation efficiency and water conservation.
