Robert Roller…April 20, 1937 – January 14, 2018

Graveside Memorial Services for Robert Roller will be held at 11am on Friday, January 19, 2018 at Fort Lyon National Cemetery in Las Animas, Colorado with Pastor Diane Hutson officiating.

Per Mr. Roller’s request, cremation has taken place.

Robert Theodore Roller was born on April 20, 1937 in Brooklyn, New York to Anna Eitel and Charles Roller. He passed away on January 14, 2018 at Arkansas Regional Medical Center in La Junta, Colorado at the age of 80.

Roberts parents were German immigrants. His mother passed away at an early age and Robert was placed in a Catholic orphanage.  He had fond memories of picnics and cookouts at the orphanage.  The highlight of his childhood was playing scouts in the woods and going to his grandmother’s house for a wonderful Thanksgiving meal.  His favorite holiday was Easter because it was close to his birthday and Robert always got candy.

Robert graduated from high school in Brooklyn and then attended college for one year. He joined the Navy and served for four years during the Korean War.  The ships he was assigned to were on the East Coast.  He was a boilerman and a fireman on those ships.  He loved life on the ocean and always said he was a sailor at heart.

After being honorably discharged from the Navy, Robert worked various jobs and came out west to look for one of his sisters, whom he never found. He lived at Fort Lyon VA Hospital for a few years, moved to a VA boarding home in Manzanola, and then found his forever home in the Bent County Healthcare Center where he made many lifelong friends who also became family to Robert.

Robert is survived by many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Anna Eitel and Charles Roller.
