obit-20

A graveside memorial service for Richard “Dick” Simpson will be held on Tuesday, June 13, 2017 at 1 p.m. at Fort Lyon National Cemetery in Las Animas, Colorado. Robert Morrow will officiate. Military committal rites provided by American Legion District #1 Post #6 and VFW Post #2411.

Richard Arthur Simpson was born on June 8, 1934 to Glen and Bertha (Tuell) Simpson in Lincoln, Nebraska and passed away on June 3, 2017 in Pueblo, Colorado.

Richard, known to most as “Dick”, grew up in Montrose, Colorado and enlisted in the United States Army in 1954, serving two years during the Korean War. After obtaining his teaching degree, he spent his career teaching Science and Physical Education and coaching Jr. High football and wrestling. He would help anyone who asked and was always willing to drive a car full of wrestlers to the next tournament. Dick retired from teaching in 1990, but remained passionate about helping youth learn the skill of wrestling. Dick’s other passion was horse racing. He was always on the lookout for a horse that had good conformation and a nice hip. You could frequently find him studying the race programs and speed index of the horses. He touched many lives and inspired others to try new things. “Heart is more important than talent.” We will always be thankful for the support and encouragement he has given to his family, friends, colleagues, and students. The care and love he gave his wife Isabell, proves his awe-inspiring integrity. Riders Up!

Dick is survived by his wife of almost 50 years, Isabell Janet (Morrow) Simpson; children, Brian Simpson, Wayne (Jill) Simpson, Janet McGinnis, Franklin (Sylvia) Robertson, Barbara (Keith) Reynolds, James Robertson, Thom (Tracy) Simpson, Lyndell (Bart) Story; 21 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Glen and Bertha (Tuell) Simpson and brother, Robert Simpson.

Memorial contributions may be made, in lieu of flowers, to Horber Funeral Chapel, P.O. Box 431 Las Animas, CO 81054.
