Lamar Days Breakfast Becomes Downtown BBQ Lunch

For numerous years, the Lamar Chamber of Commerce sponsored the traditional Friday morning, Good Morning Lamar Breakfast which was held at the Lamar Elks Lodge and later, at the Lamar Eagles Lodge. The event kicked-off the annual Lamar Days festivities.  This year, there will be a change as the chambers directors decided that instead of having folks rush through the morning for a meal and entertainment, this year, they’d offer a BBQ lunch, Friday, May 19th,  from the chamber headquarters on East Beech Street.

Servings begin at 11am and continue until 1pm with barbecued burgers on the menu along with coleslaw, baked beans, potato chips and a beverage, all for $9. There is the expectation that some downtown merchants may offer some bargains as well so folks can combine a good meal with some savings.  Extra picnic tables will be set out at the chamber parking lot, thanks to the Lamar Parks and Recreation Department.

Last year, another change had area residents wondering if moving the annual Saturday parade to South 2nd Street made any sense, a departure from the usual Main Street route.  Folks liked it for the most part and now that some major construction is taking place along Main Street, the new route makes good sense.  The staging area for the parade entries remains the same, congregating the floats and marchers in the vicinity of the Safeway parking lot.

This year’s parade theme is, “Legends of the Wild West.” Participants are encouraged to dress up to honor their favorite character from the Old West, whether it was Buffalo Bill or Calamity Jane, Bat Masterson or Miss Kitty.  The parade route will follow along South Second Street to Parkview School and around the western border of Willow Creek Park where it will conclude. The chamber has planned some events based on shooting skills for area youngsters at Willow Creek Park on Saturday, May 20th.  Return events include the Rod Run Car Show, plus food and vendor booths, some of whom will be new to the area.  WOW Bubbles, the Annual Blow-Up Car event and the Arkansas Valley Horse Pullers will make their return.  Plans are also underway for the Lamar Rotary annual Ducky Dash at the Lamar Municipal Pool.  Contact the Lamar Chamber of Commerce for more information at 336-4379.
