SoCo, a newly formed tourism promotion group, will hold its first meeting May 17th to the 19th. Approximately 150 attendees from eleven counties will discuss ways to promote and increase tourist visits in the southern and central sections of the state including Prowers County. Lodging Panel members approved a $1,200 request to promote the meeting which will attract persons from the tourism industry, including Canyons and Plains, which supports tourism in southeast Colorado. The request had been made several months ago, and although members pledged approval at that time, the vote was delayed until sufficient funds were available in the Lodging Panel budget.
Panel business manager, Carla Scranton, said the most recent revenue from the Secretary of State’s office was $176, based on a 2% motel tax levied on rooms rented in the county. She said historically, May is a good month with $14,000 received last year and another $8,000 was received in June, 2016. The Panel carries a contingency fund in the neighborhood of $18,000. The next Lodging Tax Panel meeting is set for Tuesday, April 18.
