Members of the Holly Commercial Club discussed the possibility of being one of three host communities for the next ‘Pedal the Plains’ event during their March 1st meeting. Jesse Frey reported that Holly is under consideration for the annual, three-day race which brings hundreds of bicycle enthusiasts to each community for a particular segment of the three-city race. Lamar was a host community in 2013, along with Eads and La Junta. The event is held each September. Frey said Holly should know by April if they made the selection, but felt that the road construction in downtown Lamar may hamper the chances.
The Holly Historical Society will hold a community-wide presentation on the Holly Tornado on the anniversary, Tuesday, March 28th at the Holly Theater. More details will be made available. Some photographs of the aftermath were shown to Club members by Andy Wyatt and Lee Merkel of DoLA.
Plans for the annual Bluegrass Festival were discussed. Rod Swisher said he’s looking for volunteers to help with the Friday night dinner. He suggested serving tables instead of picnic tables to more easily accommodate diners. Swisher also encouraged members to consider projects that will promote the Club in the Holly community and raise funds for activities.
Monica Leiker discussed the idea of a Holly High School sports championship sign. Club members thought it would be a good idea and she will present additional details at future meetings. Calvin Melcher reported that the Holly VFW is decorating graves for veterans and donation buckets are being placed around the town. Plans are in the works for the retirement party for Mark Vance, according to Amber Reinert. The next Holly Commercial Club meeting is set for Wednesday, April 5th at the Holly Methodist Church.
