Franklin D. McElroy was born on March 6, 1934 in Augusta, Kansas to George and Nellie Ruth (Harper) McElroy and passed away on February 19, 2017 in Las Animas, Colorado at the age of 82. Per his request, no services will be held.
Franklin graduated from McClave High School and served in the United States Navy. He was a self-employed gunsmith for 52 years, something he was very proud of. He was an avid gardener, and a “hobby” farmer who enjoyed raising goats, rabbits, ducks, and many other animals over the years. Frank lived in Hasty, Colorado for over 50 years. He served over 20 years as a volunteer on the Hasty/McClave Fire Department and served as their Chief for several of those.
Franklin is survived by his wife of 48 years, Marcia (Benbrook) McElroy of Hasty, Colorado; sons, Brady (Beth) McElroy of Lamar, Colorado and Jeff (Rhonda) McElroy of Mahomet, Illinois; siblings, Carolyn Darnell of Las Animas, Colorado, Etta Anderson of Florida, William Andrew McElroy of Chico, California; grandchildren, Cole McElroy of Mahomet, Illinois, Kenna and Colin McElroy, both of Lamar, Colorado; many nieces, nephews and extended family members.
He was preceded in death by his parents George and Nellie (Harper) McElroy; siblings, Ifred McElroy, David McElroy, Helen McElroy and Katherine Millyard.
